What is Touring?
Ski touring, also known as skinning, alpine touring, split-boarding, or backcountry skiing/snowboarding, combines the challenge of hiking up mountains with the thrill of skiing or snowboarding down. It requires specialized equipment designed for both ascent and descent.
Skis or split-boards are fitted with directional climbing skins that provide grip while moving uphill. Touring bindings play a key role, as they allow for a free heel when ascending and can be locked for a secure downhill descent. Touring boots also allow more mobility on the uphill than standard ski boots to allow for comfortable movement during ascents, yet they provide the necessary support for the downhill run. Split-boards can be reassembled into a traditional snowboard for the ride down.

Is this for me?
If you’re here, chances are you’ve heard people talking about backcountry skiing or snowboarding. Often, these activities are portrayed in terms of dramatic, high-risk alpine terrain, especially in ski and snowboard films. This can create the misconception that only those with exceptional downhill skills can participate. However, this is not the case.
Touring is a versatile activity that allows you to access resort hills during off-hours, get some exercise, or explore more moderate terrain like backcountry carriage roads and forested areas. With downhill skiing/snowboarding experience, riding outside of resort boundaries becomes an attainable adventure. Both ski touring and split-boarding offer a blend of adventure and exercise, with the intensity entirely up to you—whether you’re seeking a gentle, scenic tour or a more challenging, aggressive experience, these activities cater to all skill levels.

What ability level do I need to be to join ?
Our programs are focused on uphill skiing and snowboarding and are open to all uphill ability levels. First time touring? We welcome you to join us in a safe and supportive environment. However, we do require that participants are comfortable skiing/snowboarding downhill on beginner to moderate terrain, such as green circle and blue square trails at resorts.
If you’re interested in trying ski touring or split-boarding but have no downhill experience, we recommend taking a downhill skiing lesson at a resort beforehand to ensure you're prepared for the descent.
Note: Certain programs designed for underrepresented athletes do not require any prior downhill skiing experience. If this applies, it will be clearly indicated on the specific program page.

What if I don't have the gear?
Ski touring and split-boarding rentals are available through various rental shops listed on each program page. Rentals must be reserved in advance and can be picked up on the morning of your tour.

Fitness Level?
While our programs welcome participants of all ability levels, it's important to assess your personal fitness. You should be comfortable ascending the uphill route outlined on each program page at a relaxed pace and able to ski or ride back down afterward. Please review the specific route details for the program you are interested in to ensure it aligns with your fitness level.
